Basateen Retail BI

Overview

Self-hosted Redash instance querying the client's Oracle ERP and two POS systems — giving category managers, buyers, and the MD a single SQL-powered BI layer without a dedicated data engineer.

The challenge

Category managers and buyers relied entirely on the IT team to extract data from the Oracle ERP. Every ad-hoc question — which SKUs haven't moved in 90 days, which stores are below target on soft furnishings — took two working days to get back as a spreadsheet. Slow-mover inventory was costing OMR 420k per year in tied-up capital.

The solution

Our approach

We deployed Redash (self-hosted OSS edition) with a read-only PostgreSQL mirror of the Oracle ERP populated via a nightly Python ETL job — avoiding any direct production query risk. We built a library of 60 parameterised queries and dashboards covering sell-through rates, days-on-hand, and inter-store transfer opportunities. A scheduled Redash alert fires a WhatsApp message to the buying team every Monday morning listing any item over 90 days no-sale.

Outcomes

What we delivered

Buyers gained self-service analytics — IT data requests dropped to near zero

Slow-mover clearance programme drove a 29% reduction in 90-day no-sale inventory

Tied-up slow-mover capital released: OMR 122k in the first 6 months

MD's weekly performance review now runs from a Redash dashboard, not an Excel deck

Client testimonial

“I used to wait two days every time I needed a number. Now I open Redash and the answer is there. The slow-mover alerts alone have already paid for this project many times over.”
